The rise of multitasking skincare products and the reality behind them

Something’s shifting in the skincare industry. And it's not subtle.

Walk through any beauty aisle today — physical or digital, and you'll see that hybrid products are ruling the next wave of skincare.

The ‘single-job’ product is quietly giving way to something more ambitious: the multitaskers.

And the numbers say the same story.

The global hybrid market was valued at over $24 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach $34 billion by 2028.

So, if you still think it’s a niche trend, think again.

LESS IS MORE when formulated well

Skincare routines got complicated fast.

Ten-step regimens went viral, then came the reality check. People realised more steps doesn't automatically mean better skin but more irritation, more ingredient conflicts, and an expensive shelf full of half-used products.

Multitasking products are increasingly in demand because of time-pressed schedules, a move toward less waste, and the desire for better value — but the condition is that they actually deliver results.

That's a fair bar.

Hybrid products when formulated well, they clear it.

A moisturiser with both ceramides and hyaluronic acid isn't a gimmick - those ingredients work well together and serve complementary purposes. A moisturiser built with ceramides, peptides, and antioxidants in one bottle isn't cutting corners. It's smart formulation.

There's real merit here. The key phrase being: when formulated right.

Hybrid product ≠ Skipping steps

Over the years, there's been a parallel conversation revolving around skipping steps.

The argument is simple: hybrid products have the benefit of two embedded into one.

However, that’s where the concept of hybrid skincare products loses originality. Let’s understand it through an example: SPF moisturisers

The pitch: hydration and sun protection in one step.

The argument: There's a specific reason most dermatologists still recommend a dedicated sunscreen

The logic: SPF ratings are calculated using a precise quantity of product — roughly 2mg per square centimetre of skin.

For your face, that's about two finger-lengths of product.

A published study in which 84 participants applied both an SPF moisturiser and a dedicated sunscreen found that people missed 16.6% of their face with the moisturiser versus 11.1% with sunscreen. They had no idea they were doing this.

The verdict: We apply moisturiser lightly, focused on feel. We apply sunscreen with more intention and more quantity. Same SPF number on the label. Very different outcomes on skin.

Unless you're applying more than four times your usual amount of moisturiser, chances are your SPF moisturiser isn't delivering the protection.

And then there's reapplication. Sunscreen needs to go back on approximately every two hours outdoors. Nobody is reapplying their morning moisturiser at 2 PM.

None of this makes SPF moisturisers bad products.

They genuinely help people who have minimal outdoor exposure or who wouldn't reach for SPF otherwise. But an SPF moisturiser is an added layer of protection and not a sunscreen replacement.

The logic matters.

So, what are hybrid products actually good for?

Simply put, it depends.

The distinction worth making is this: there's a difference between ingredients that belong together and steps that serve different functions

Combining actives that work at the same pH, in complementary concentrations, targeting related concerns. That's where hybrid products earn their place.

But when a product makes you believe in skipping steps, pause and ask what you're actually trading off.

The convenience is real only if the function isn't being compromised.

This is why hybrid skincare is an add-on advantage, not a shortcut through your routine.

Think of a well-formulated 2-in-1 as getting more from each step not fewer steps at the cost of efficacy.

The products getting this right are the ones being honest about what they do: they're combining what belongs together.

The bottom line

Multitasking skincare is a legitimate evolution.

One that’s driven by smarter formulation science and consumers who've gotten better at reading past the hype.

The best hybrid products will do more in one bottle without asking you to compromise on what it actually needs to deliver.

That's the whole idea.
