Dandruff Fungus and its Causes

Most of us have struggled with the problem of dandruff fungus. It is not only embarrassing to have white skin flakes on your shoulders but also irritating to scratch the itchy scalp. Dandruff is one issue which can affect anyone irrespective of the age of the person. The greatest misconception about dandruff is that it is caused only on dry scalp. In fact, dandruff is caused on oily scalp due to excessive oil production.

Dandruff can be caused due to a lot of reasons like poor hygiene, stress, unhealthy diet etc. Apart from this, the main cause of dandruff is yeast-like-fungus which feeds on oil and lives on the scalp. This fungus is called malassezia globosa. This fungus uses an enzyme known as lipase to metabolize the oils that it consumes. Now, this lipase produces a by-product called oleic acid which causes dandruff. So basically, dandruff is caused either due to excessive oil production or not effective removal.

Let us have a look at some of the causes of dandruff fungus:

1. Oily skin

Oily or irritated scalp also known as seborrheic dermatitis in medical terms is one of the most common causes of dandruff. You can find dandruff on the oily or greasy skin with yellow or white flakes. Not only your scalp, but dandruff can also appear in any part of the body where oil glands are active like eyebrows, armpits, behind your ears, or on the sides of your nose.

2. Not Shampooing Regularly

Dandruff fungus is very prominent amongst those who do not wash their hair regularly. When you do not wash your hair regularly, your scalp starts producing oil on its own in order to provide moisture and adequate nutrients to your strands. Now, since the oils and skin cells stay together, they start forming dandruff fungus.

3. Excessive Dead Cells

Dandruff is basically excessive dead skin cells deposited on the hair. So, when there is an increase in the number of dead cells, dandruff is caused. Not only this, dead cells production can be increased due to the usage of hair products that do not suit you well i.e. contact dermatitis or due to the fungal infection caused on the scalp. Excessive malassezia or white flakes on scalp mostly live on the scalp of adults.

4. Dry Scalp

However, the scalp fungus from dry skin are comparatively smaller but they are equally irritating. You might have redness or inflammation.

5. Other Illnesses

Please be sure that you have dandruff fungus before starting its treatment because sometimes people consider the small flaking as dandruff which is actually normal for the skin in order to remove the dead cells and give space to form new cells. Else, you can also be sure that you have dandruff if you are facing some skin problems, neurological illness, hormonal changes, ageing etc.

Get rid of Scalp Fungus

In order to get rid of dandruff, you can use jojoba oil, tea tree oil, fenugreek oil or sage oil which slows the skin cell growth and removes the dead cells or you can use antifungals. If you wish to buy anti-dandruff shampoo, you must make sure that it has Piroctone Olamine which is a very strong anti-dandruff agent.  You can also try certain home remedies to get rid of white flakes on the scalp but the best option is, to use Pre-Wash Anti Dandruff Lotion and Anti-Dandruff Shampoo on a regular basis for some time till you feel that your scalp is normal.
